The best time to visit Kerala, for a hill resort
The best time to visit Kerala for a hill resort is October through March. A direct answer, a month-by-month breakdown, and a note on the monsoon.
The short answer to the question of the best time to visit Kerala for a hill resort is October through March. The air is cool, the meadows are dry, the tea is greenest, and the pool is still warm. The longer answer is below, by month, with the two exceptions that might change your mind.
The short answer, first
If you are planning a Kerala hill resort week and want one sentence, pick any week between mid-October and mid-March. Those five months give you daytime temperatures of 20 to 26 degrees Celsius in the hills, night-time around 12 to 16, and almost no rain. The meadows are walkable, the tea gardens are at their best colour, and the drive from Cochin is not flooded.
The best time to visit Kerala is not the same for everyone. For a hill resort, this is the answer. For the backwaters or the coast, the window is similar, but with slightly warmer nights and a bit more humidity. For the monsoon, see below.
October, the turn
October is the end of the south-west monsoon. By the middle of the month, the rains are down to a few afternoons a week, the air is washed clean, and the hills are the greenest you will ever see them. Rates have not fully come up yet. Of the five peak months, October is the best balance of weather and price.
The only risk is a late monsoon, which happens one in four or five years. If you book October, have a Plan B for a day of rain.
November and December, the peak
November is settled, cool, and dry. December is colder in the hills, down to ten degrees at night. Both months are peak for hill resorts, with the Christmas week being the most expensive week of the year. If you want Vagamon or Munnar in December, book by September.
The advantage of December is the tea is in its season and the Eravikulam and Pampadum Shola are at their best. The disadvantage is the rate and the crowd.
January, February, early March, the sweet spot
Late January through the first week of March is the quietest half of peak. The weather is still cool and dry, the Christmas crowd has gone home, and the schools have not started their spring break yet. Rates soften by 10 to 20 per cent. If you can pick any five weeks of the year, pick these.
Mid-March onwards, the plains start to heat up. The hills are still pleasant, but day temperatures creep to 28 degrees. The tea begins to look dustier. Book earlier in the window if you can.
April and May, the shoulder
April and May are warm in the Kerala plains (32 to 36 degrees) but still fine in the hills (24 to 28). The crowds are gone. Rates are off-peak. The meadows are drier and the sun is stronger.
If the question is the best time to visit Kerala for a hill resort with few other guests, April is a legitimate pick. A hill resort at 1,100 metres (Vagamon) or 1,600 metres (Munnar) is not hot in April. A beach resort is. Plan accordingly.
June through September, the monsoon
The south-west monsoon is the big rainfall season in Kerala. June is the heaviest. July and August ease slightly. September can have longer dry spells. If you want a hill resort in peak green, with fog, with an empty meadow and a half-price rate, the monsoon is not a bad idea. If you want to swim, the hill pools are still warm. If you want to trek, you need leech socks and a flexible schedule.
Monsoon is for repeat visitors, or for travellers who like the rain as a character in the trip. First-timers should come in December or February instead.
A simple rule
For a first Kerala trip and a hill resort: mid-October to early March. For a second trip, or a quieter week: April, or the monsoon. For the lowest rate in peak: late January.
The best time to visit Kerala for a hill resort is a personal question, but these rules get most guests to the right month without having to study a chart.
