Days that fill themselves.
Every resort opens onto something. Tea gardens and a pine forest at Vagamon, a working plantation near Thenmala, a valley of cardamom at Panchalimedu, and the sea at Veli.
Vagamon
A walk through the Vagamon Pine Forest
Ten minutes' drive. Cooler than anywhere else in Kerala at three in the afternoon.
The meadows at dawn
A guided walk across the Vagamon meadows while the mist still holds. Back for coffee by nine.
Tea factory visit
We book a walk-through of a working factory twenty minutes away. Taste the tea you had at breakfast.
Dinner on the lawn
Appam and stew, prawns from Kottayam, a fire we light at seven. Only if you ask.
Thazhvaram
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
An hour down the road. Boat safari on the lake and a guided forest walk. We book the permits.
Cardamom plantation walk
A caretaker-led walk through the working plantation behind the cottages. Forty minutes.
Munnar tea country day trip
An easy two-hour drive. Leave after breakfast, back before dinner.
Kerala home-style dinner
Beef ularthiyathu, appam, Kumily pepper chicken. The caretaker cooks if you ask a day ahead.
Planter's Portico
Tea factory tour
A walk-through of the working 1920s factory with the foreman. The tea you had at breakfast was picked yesterday.
Forest trek, guided
An hour with a tracker who grew up on the estate. Leech socks provided.
Rubber tapping at dawn
Walk out with the tappers at six. Back for breakfast. Quiet, repetitive, oddly moving.
Dinner on the verandah
A long table, a planter's menu, and only the two of you, or the six of you. The caretaker serves.
By the Sea
The sea at five in the morning
A chair on the sand, a cup of something hot, and the fishermen coming back in.
Fish market and breakfast
The Veli market is loud and good. Pick what you want; the caretaker will cook it for lunch.
Kovalam in the afternoon
Fifteen minutes south. Leave after breakfast, swim, eat, back for dusk.
Trivandrum day trip
The Napier Museum, the Padmanabhaswamy temple, a long south Indian lunch.
