Planter's Portico by Heyday
1930s bungalow, 2,700 acres.
A 1930s planter's bungalow inside a working 2,700-acre plantation near Thenmala. Thick white walls, deep verandahs, a pool under the frangipani, and the kind of quiet you do not find in hotels. The whole bungalow is yours for the nights you book.
Planter's Portico was built in the 1930s as the manager's residence for a tea and rubber estate in the southern Western Ghats. We took over the bungalow in 2019 and restored it, keeping the red-oxide floors, the monkey-top gables, the planter's chairs, and the kitchen with its wood-fired range. The estate around it is still a working plantation, you will see rubber tappers at six in the morning and the factory running through the day.
Four bedrooms, each large enough to hold a planter's desk and an armchair. The verandah wraps three sides and catches the breeze all afternoon. A natural-rock pool sits fifty metres from the house, under a frangipani. The thick walls and eight-foot ceilings mean two of the bedrooms need no air conditioning even in April.
If you want a Kerala plantation stay that is genuinely inside a plantation, not a resort built to look like one, this is it. The nearest neighbour is three kilometres away. We ask you not to come here expecting a lobby.
- Couples who want the most private resort in Kerala
- Groups of six to eight who want a house and a plantation to themselves
- People researching plantation stays in Kerala as an alternative to Munnar
- Writers and anyone who needs three days without a phone signal
