Cochin airport to Vagamon, a practical note

How to reach Vagamon from Cochin airport: the 94 km drive, the two route options, what to eat on the way, and a first-night plan at your vagamon resort.

The short answer: Vagamon is 94 kilometres from Cochin airport and takes about three hours by car. The longer answer covers the two routes, the food stops, and what to do on your first evening so that you do not waste the climb by going straight to bed. Here is how to reach Vagamon from Cochin airport, practically.

The distance, and why three hours feels right

Cochin International Airport (COK) is in Nedumbassery, 30 kilometres north-east of Kochi city. Vagamon is 94 kilometres south-east, in the Idukki district, at 1,100 metres elevation. On paper that is a two-hour drive. In practice, because the last forty kilometres climb steadily on a mountain road, the full trip takes just under three hours. Add twenty minutes for a tea stop and you are at three and a quarter.

This is a comfortable first-day drive if your flight lands by noon. If you land after four in the afternoon, the last forty minutes are in the dark, which is fine but less scenic. We usually recommend a car for four or more, or a pre-booked taxi for a couple.

Two routes, one clear winner

Route one, via Kottayam and Erattupetta, is 98 km and well-paved most of the way. This is the route we send all our guests. It runs through rubber estates and the Meenachil river valley, and climbs to Vagamon through the cardamom belt. Three hours, minimal traffic outside peak season.

Route two, via Thodupuzha and Moolamattom, is 88 km but goes through rougher mountain road in the last twenty kilometres. It is faster on paper and slower in practice, with more switchbacks and a few patches that wash out in the monsoon. Only take route two if your driver knows it and the weather is dry.

Stops worth making

Sixty kilometres in, you pass through Kottayam. If you have time, the Arundhathi Jewellers roundabout area has several good Kerala meal places. A half-hour stop for a banana leaf lunch (fish curry, rice, thoran, two or three vegetables) is 200 to 300 rupees per person and is better than anything you will eat on the highway.

Further up, around Erattupetta, there are roadside tea stalls with parippu vada and beef fry. A tea stop takes fifteen minutes. Around Teekoy, the valley opens up and you get the first view of the Vagamon hills. Pull over for a minute. The photograph is better than any you will take once you check in.

Arriving at a Vagamon resort

You will climb the last ten kilometres from Teekoy into Vagamon proper. Most vagamon resorts are in the Kolahalamedu or Valacodu belt, three to five kilometres from the town centre. Check-in at Heyday Vagamon is from two. If you arrive earlier, the caretaker will settle you on the balcony with coffee while the rooms are prepared.

The altitude at 1,100 metres is not high enough to cause any discomfort, but the temperature drop from Kochi is real. Thirty-two degrees in Nedumbassery, twenty-two in Vagamon. Bring a light jacket for the evening.

The first evening plan

Do not drive anywhere on the first evening. The best first night at a vagamon resort is a walk around the property, a pool (the Heyday Vagamon infinity pool is heated in the cool months), and dinner at the villa. Order Kerala home food if the caretaker can cook it, or the driver will fetch something from town if you did not warn us.

If you have the energy for one small outing, the Vagamon meadows are a fifteen-minute drive and are at their best an hour before sunset. The light is good, the crowd is gone by six, and you can be back at the villa by seven. Most guests do this on day two, not day one. Either works.

If you are coming without a car

The nearest train station is Kottayam (KTYM), 65 km from Vagamon and on the main Trivandrum to Cochin line. From there, a pre-arranged taxi is 1,800 to 2,500 rupees. Uber and Ola are not reliable for this route.

There is no direct bus from Cochin airport to Vagamon. KSRTC buses run from Ernakulam to Vagamon but are slower and infrequent. For most guests, a pre-booked car is the right answer.
